as a uga alumni i shall endeavor to provide some insight into the past, some hope for the future and some takes on the here and now. sounds like a bit much for me, but like a true junkyard dawg, i will fight to hunker down and get it done!

1980 redux
I recently was gifted a copy of a new DVD set that struck close to my heart. The two disc set: "1980 Dawgs:The Inside Story of the National Championship Season." To say I was thrilled to hear I'd be getting it as a gift would be an understatement.
I first held it my hands at 2 am and had to wait until the following morning/afternoon to watch it.At a running time of 3.5 hours it was not a late-night possibility. My sleep was filled with dreams that wonderful, magical year. I was fortunate to be able to attend all but 2 games that year ( Kentucky and South Carolina). The chance to relive all that happened was indeed a dream come true.
Upon watching it for the first time I was impressed with the production of it. The chapters are well organized and well done. I will admit I had some teary-eyed moments...especially during the "Erk Russell Tribute" and the "Florida Game" chapter.
The player interviews...were awesome! Insiders view indeed. The 2 people notably missing were the two who cast a large, imposing shadow over 1980: Erk Russell (RIP) and Herschel Walker. Erk was obviously and sadly not available. Herschel always said it was not about him. It was about the team. Ole #34 not appearing, to me, underlines his statement. TEAM me ...one of the many nuggets Erk left for us... along with GATA... One More Time...
I would like to thank Mr. Mike Moss on behalf of Dawg Nation for presenting us with this with this tribute to the "UNDEFEATED,UNTIED AND UNDENIED" 1980 GEORGIA BULLDOGS! god bless you and yours Mike! #GoDawgs

excerpt from: the year of the wonderdawgs
"well guys, here we are in the tiger's den! baton rogue on a saturday night, a place THEY call DEATH VALLEY! there must be at least a half million raging cajuns jammed into this place. here we are, about 3/4 of a mile from the mighty ole man river and at the half we are trailing the tigers by ten! well, we might just get run right into that mighty river if we can't get something going here as we receive the second half kick-off!
the young freshman Lindsay Scott, from Jesup, is back to receive the kick. Oh my Lord... just listen to these people... so loud... they say this is the scariest place to play on a saturday night, i think they might be right! the crowd is screaming: " goooooo..." so loudly that i just wet myself, with a cola i spilled from a cup! "gooooo..." getting louder still! "goooooo..." there's the kick, high and long...Lindsay takes it at the one or two and here he comes... watch it, watch it... a hole opens up in the middle of the field and young Lindsay has just blown into the open.... 40..he's at the 50... the 45...40...35..30...can he go? 25..20...15...10... a defender with an angle is trying to get him, Lindsay twists away and he scores a touchdown! Lindsay Scott has just gotten the dawgs back into a game we have no reason to be in. Trailing at the half, on the road, in Baton Rouge, on a Saturday night, with half a million Ragin' Cajuns at our throats the dawgs have made it a game!" it was one of the most exciting plays i've ever seen. my buds and i not only spilled cokes, we spilled bourbon! if not for our joy, we might have cried about that!

the year 19 and 77: the year the wheels fell off the veer
coming off of a great 2 year run in '75/'76 we uga students were ready to go for it in '77! it did not go exactly as we had hoped for! we lost probably the best option qb of all time (ray goff) and a whole bunch of other great stars from the roster. yet, being the always hopeful dawgs of the 'old days' that we were, we were going up to #1 in 1977! expectations were higher than i had ever experienced in the classic city. the '72-'74 seasons were average, to be very kind! all of the sudden, here come the '75 dudes! what a great season, topped with a trip to the Cotton Bowl where the #hogs kicked our asses (will post about that another time, great road trip)! then along come the 1976 SEC CHAMPION JUNKYARD DAWGS! I was lucky to get to see every game live, in person, that year except one! i could not get out to #oxford for what turned out to be our only regular season loss. i, to this very day believe, if i had gotten out there we would have won! #mybad! Erk's D showed up every game to GATA and the offense, led by Goff, was fairly unstoppable! then came the #sugarbowl v. pitt (that's another post for another time/space). so...here we were standing at the edge of the abyss, do we fall into the pit or do we keep rolling on? well that question was answered in the year 19 and77. that is what i will always remember as: "the year the wheels fell off the veer!"
THE YOUNGLINGS LEARN ABOUT BEING JEDI
THIS IS A POST THAT SHALL TELL THE STORY OF NUMEROUS YOUNG JEDI, ER..BULLDAWGS WHO LEARNED THE TRUE NATURE OF THE FORCE IN THE YEARS 1977-1979! THE TRIALS OF ADVERSITY, FRUSTRATION AND JOY THESE YOUNG ONES LIVED THROUGH LED TO A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FOR UGA IN 1980! TOLD THROUGH MY OWN EYES AS A PROFESSIONAL STUDENT, THESE TALES WILL SOMETIMES EXCITE, SOMETIMES NOT SO MUCH. THE FACT IS: THESE YOUNG LADS OF "77 GREW INTO NATIONAL CHAMPS IN '80. OF COURSE THE ADDITION OF #34, THE JEDI MASTER OF ALL TIME, LOADED UP OUR I-FORMATION WITH NITRO.THE TEAM AS A WHOLE NEEDED JUST A BIT OF NITRO TO BLOW UP THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL WORLD IN 1980. IT WAS ALL: " GO YOU SILVER BRITCHES," GO YOU HAIRY DAWGS," "HUNKER DOWN YOU GUYS," AND OF COURSE: "GLORY,GLORY!" IF I CAN TRANSMIT A SMALL FRACTION OF THE EXCITEMENT I LIVED THROUGH, WELL THAT WOULD BE AWESOME FOR SURE! #godawgs
